The Human Resources (HR) Department supports Kershaw County’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives in our commitment to recruit, develop, reward, and retain a professional and courteous workforce. 

HR is responsible for:

  • Processing new employees through background checks, drug screens, county-level orientation and benefits training

  • Managing the benefits program for existing employees (i.e. medical, dental, vision, long term disability, South Carolina retirement, South Carolina deferred compensation, etc.) through open enrollment and life changes

  • Developing and maintaining county-wide personnel policies

  • Addressing and managing safety and risk management issues (including worker’s compensation)

  • Managing and overseeing proper implementation of federal and state laws including but not limited to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FSLA), Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, American with Disabilities Act (ADA), etc.

  • Gathering employee feedback and encouraging positive employee relations

  • Managing and tracking the implementation of annual employee performance appraisals

  • Coordinating the employee appreciation program

  • Other programs as appropriate

HR is NOT responsible for:

  • Screening applicants for county positions or making hiring decisions for vacant positions (Department leaders have this responsibility)

  • Processing payroll

  • Maintaining vacation/sick time
