GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this class is to ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the Kershaw County Airport (Woodward Field) by serving as the primary attendant. This role is responsible for the direct provision of aircraft fuel services and quality control, essential facilities maintenance, and professional customer relations for pilots and airport tenants. The position requires a high degree of dependability, a focus on safety and regulatory compliance (including FAA and environmental standards), and the ability to perform physical labor in varying weather conditions.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.

●Perform quality control checks on aircraft fuel and manage fuel inventories and sales.

●Monitor airfield conditions daily, including performing regular FAA-required inspections of runways, taxiways, and ramps to check for Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and other hazards.

●Ensure compliance with Environmental Regulations, including proper disposal of waste oil/filters, adherence to the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWP3), and timely cleanup and reporting of fuel or oil spills.

●Move planes safely in and out of hangars for based pilots, once trained, and perform aircraft marshalling and guiding for transient aircraft.

●Work effectively with airport tenants, pilots, and other airport personnel, providing support such as assisting with ground transportation and basic flight planning assistance.

●Demonstrate strong professional communication, problem-solving skills, and a helpful, courteous and positive attitude when interacting with the public and airport clientele.

●Perform basic custodial and light maintenance tasks for the terminal building, hangars, and grounds, including cleaning, minor painting, and simple repairs (e.g., electrical, plumbing, carpentry).

●Assist in maintaining and operating essential airport systems, such as airfield lighting, safety, and security access controls.

●Process fuel and tie-down payments, maintain accurate daily logs of services, fuel inventories, and sales, and perform other related administrative duties as required.

●Assist with ground upkeep, including landscaping and debris removal from airport property.

●Perform any other duties as required

DATA INVOLVEMENT:

Requires tracking and recording operational data, including maintaining accurate daily logs of fuel inventories, sales, services, and processing payments.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:

Requires direct interaction and assistance with customers (pilots, tenants) and coordinating activities to ensure safety and service quality, requiring tact and courtesy.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:

Requires operating and maintaining airport equipment and infrastructure, including fuel pumps, airfield lighting, safety/security access controls, and safely moving aircraft.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

 

REASONING REQUIREMENTS:

Requires problem-solving and making immediate judgments on airfield safety and compliance (e.g., FOD checks, spill response).

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires using mathematics involving basic arithmetic for inventory management, sales, and payment processing.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires reading technical instructions and procedures (e.g., FAA checklists, safety manuals); composing routine reports and logs; and speaking compound sentences using strong professional communication skills with pilots and airport personnel.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires continuous, close attention for safety and accurate results during critical operations like fueling, aircraft handling, and airfield monitoring.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

 

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires a high school diploma and a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Preference will be given to candidates with airport experience, mechanical aptitude or prior experience in a highly regulated environment. Required to have and maintain a clear background check and pass a drug screening.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels from aircraft operations, moving machinery (aircraft), and toxic/caustic chemicals (fuel/oil). The attendant will primarily work outdoors, exposed to all seasonal weather conditions.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

The job requires normal visual acuity, depth perception and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities for safety-critical tasks like marshalling, fueling, and airfield monitoring.
