Job Title: Corrections Shift Sergeant

Job Type: Full Time

Pay: $55,000

Location: Kershaw County Detention Center

Hours: Rotating 12-hour shifts, 14-day monthly schedules, with a on-call schedule

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB

  • Under the supervision of the Jail Operations/Designee. coordinates management of all operational and security activities of the Kershaw County Detention Center to ensure the proper enforcement of jail procedures, programs, safety and security.

    SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Supervises security personnel, reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; and offers advice and assistance as needed.
  • Assists in providing on the job training for security officers.
  • Conducts shift briefing to update security personnel on recent events and activities.
  • Responds to emergency situations as required and notifies the Jail Administrator and on-call Lieutenant as appropriate.
  • Interprets legal and non-legal documents, including the processing of such documents such as medical instructions, commitment orders, summons, and other legal writs and court documents.
  • Reviews and prepares a variety of reports ensuring the use of appropriate grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Processes reports as appropriate, i.e., files, alphabetizes, labels, etc.
  • Ensures that the ongoing maintenance and cleanliness standards of the facility are met.
  • Ensures that inmate head counts and security checks are performed on a regular basis; ensures security of facility, personnel and inmates at all times.
  • Ensures the proper booking and release of all inmates, and reviews all paperwork for accuracy.
  • Ensures that physical and personal needs of inmates are addressed, issues mail and personal items, and ensures cleanliness of inmate living areas. Issues linens and issued clothing, assists in serving meals to inmates, assists in dispensing medication, etc.
  • Restrains inmates, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other authorized restraints. Subdues resisting inmates by using appropriate maneuvers to gain control of the situation.
  • Uses radio, intercom, and telephone communications systems to communicate effectively with detention center personnel and inmates.
  • Conducts visual and audio surveillance of inmates for extended periods of time.
  • Inspects for and confiscated contraband.
  • Sets clear expectations for inmates using positive reinforcement techniques. Holds inmates accountable for their behavior, treats inmates with respect, and is fair and just when managing inmates. Provides appropriate disciplines for inmates who violate the facility’s rules and regulations.
  • Performs crisis intervention functions to include inmate counseling, suicide prevention, recognizing abnormal behavior, and implementing appropriate intervention action.
  • Performs searches of people, mail items, objects capable of concealing contraband, buildings, vehicles, and large outdoor areas.
  • Transports and escorts inmates using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.
  • Must maintain and be current with firearm qualifications.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as computer, printer, copier, intercom, radios, telephone, vehicles, firearms, etc.
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned to maintain the safety and security of the Kershaw County Detention Center.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires High School Diploma.
  • Three (3) years of progressive supervisory detention work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in corrections or law enforcement, supplemented by detention officer certification training.
  • Must have completed Basic Correctional Officers Certification and be certified as a Class II Officer or higher (or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience).
  • Must complete a minimum of 40 hours of mandatory in-service training per year.
  • Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s License and have a clean driving record.
  • Must maintain and be current with firearms qualifications.
  • Must pass credit and background checks.
  • Each applicant who is tendered an offer for employment for any position with Kershaw County shall be tested for the use of drugs specified in the County policy.
  • Must be able to exert 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to physically restrain an inmate.
  • Must be able to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must possess visual acuity to prepare records and reports; observe people and things for security purposes, and operate electronic control panels and view computer screens.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle and a variety of equipment and machines including a two-way radio, pager, computer, telephone, cameras, etc.; utilizes an assortment of weapons and prisoner restraint devices, i.e., handcuffs, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to physically separate two or more fighting inmates with the help of another officer. Must be able to physically restrain an inmate. Must be able to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics of data, people or things. Must demonstrate good judgment and the ability to make decisions quickly.
  • Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving work assignments, instructions and directions to subordinate personnel.
  • Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documents and reports. Requires the ability to prepare admissions reports, inmate counts, investigative reports, suicide reports, court reports, letters of correspondence, applications, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style. Must be able to speak with and before others with clarity, voice control and confidence.
  • Must be capable of hearing a conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 21 years of age or older. Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have completed Basic Correctional Officers Certification and be certified as a Class II Officer or higher (or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience).
  • Must complete a minimum of 40 hours of mandatory in-service training per year.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Test of Adult Basic Education (T.A.B.E.).
  • Required to have and maintain a good driving record and a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
  • Must pass credit and background checks, and polygraph and drug tests.
