Job:                             Building and Grounds Maintenance Technician

Type:                           Full Time/Hourly

Work Schedule:    Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (may be required to respond to emergency calls after hours)

Location:                    Kershaw County Detention Center, Camden SC

Salary:                         Dependent on Qualifications   $30,976 – 34,000 (Hiring Range)

 

General Statement of Job

The Building and Grounds Maintenance Technician maintains the Kershaw County Detention Center buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure the safety and security of the facility. To accomplish these tasks the Building and Grounds Maintenance Technician must adhere to all Detention Center security and policy procedures and work closely with the administrative staff and the Kershaw County Facilities Director.

Essential Functions

Maintains buildings and grounds in top condition.

Works closely with the County’s Facility Director about work that requires outside expert assistance. Obtains quotes from vendors/contractors for projects and/or repairs as necessary.

Coordinates and maintains records for inspections and repairs with outside vendors and contractors. Verifies all inspections are current and up-to-date.

Supervises the activities of outside vendors, contractors and technicians.

Maintains inventory of chemicals, various supplies and equipment related to building and grounds maintenance.

Coordinates or inspects, operates and maintains the heating, cooling and ventilation systems (including boiler system) at the facility.

Does general repairs such as painting, patching walls, plumbing, basic electric, small equipment repairs, security hardware repairs, landscaping, mowing and general grounds upkeep.

Receives and responds to maintenance requests in a timely manner.

Maintains fire, smoke, and other safety systems within the structures including outside generators.

Performs preventative maintenance, repairs, and installation in connection with:

            Electrical, plumbing, access control, and HVAC systems

            Exterior and interior buildings

            Grounds and Roof Top Systems

            Mechanical Locking Mechanisms

 

Observes County and Detention Center policies at all times, and adheres to all County, City and State health and safety codes and procedures.

Advises the administrative staff and County Facilities Director on the condition of the buildings and facilities by conducting regular inspections of those areas and reporting the results of the inspections with particular emphasis on needed repairs.

Assures safety during inclement weather to include shoveling, salting, providing slip protection on wet floors and ingress and egress areas, securing against wind damage, snow removal, hurricane preparations, and topping off fuel in generators in case of an emergency.

Keeps abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.

Qualifications

Must be 21 years of age.

High school diploma or equivalent.

5 years’ experience as a Building and Grounds Maintenance Technician or related field.

Hold a valid South Carolina driver’s license and have and maintain a safe driving record.

Must pass a background check including drug testing.

Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with all County employees, vendors, contractors and the general public, and maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times.

Ability to work in a secure environment among inmates.

Strong knowledge of automatic fire alarms/sprinkler systems, lawn and turf care, HVAC systems/controls, plumbing and electrical systems. Experience with and working knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials and equipment.

Ability to meet tight time constraints and deadlines.

Ability to work using ladders, scaffolding and county vehicles/equipment. Ability to spend most of the work day standing, lifting and walking.

Operate a variety of equipment such as computer, printer, copier, intercom, radios, telephone, vehicles, tools, etc.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move heavy materials using appropriate equipment.

Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone. Ability to complete reports, maintain inventories, etc.
